E-Waste Growth
Technology has become a tremendously important part of our everyday lives; it controls and affects every aspect of our daily actions. The constant increasing demand for more advanced technology and introduction of newer electronic products in the marketplace are accelerating the creation of both ‘new and retired’ electronic products. As the result, it has created an enormous build-up and growth in electionic waste.
E-Waste Challenge
Electronic waste (E-waste) is becoming one of America’s fastest growing problems. A study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that e-waste constitutes for 4% of the U.S. municipal solid waste stream and is growing at a tremendously accelerated speed at 2-3 times faster than any other waste streams. And, the most frightening fact is that only 10% of American households are currently recycling their unwanted electronics or e-waste.

E-waste carries toxic substances that cause both lethal and irreversible effects to our health and environment. These substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, lithium, brominated flame retardants, phosphorous coatings, and PVC plastics that create dioxins when burned. The improper disposal of these end-of-life electronics in the landfills will corrode and release variant toxicities into the ground and atmosphere. A study by the Griffith University showed that 40% of, just the lead content alone, found in landfills, are coming from e-waste.

Electronic Crushing/Recycling Machine | Only recently, through the city/state government, social public and private corporate efforts, e-waste and e-recycling have received its proper notoriety and visibility; and they are becoming an important issue on every level of the governments’ agendas. However, we are still falling far behind from achieving our e-waste recycling, reduction and prevention goal due to the lack of visibility and awareness for the campaign’s existence, more importantly, the effect of e-waste onto our atmosphere and on our planet.
